Venezuela Earthquake Update

More than a week after two devastating earthquakes — measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 — struck northern Venezuela within seconds of each other, the scale of the tragedy continues to grow. More than 2,200 people have died, over 11,000 have been injured and an estimated 6 million people have been affected. Search-and-rescue operations continue, though hopes of finding additional survivors are fading.

The Impact on Venezuela's Jewish Community

We are deeply saddened to report that nine members of the Jewish community have perished. Fifteen Jewish-owned homes have been destroyed, and the Hebraica JCC has become a critical lifeline — initially sheltering approximately 400 people in the immediate aftermath, with around 15 evacuees still on site whose homes remain uninhabitable.

The Jewish community has responded with remarkable strength and compassion. JDC and the Jewish Agency for Israel deployed emergency food, medical supplies and psychosocial support teams. A day camp serving 143 children is helping parents manage repairs and recovery. Volunteers are supporting relief efforts across Caracas and beyond, delivering food, water, hygiene supplies and essential items to affected communities.

Israel has also deployed a joint humanitarian delegation, the first official contact between Israeli and Venezuelan foreign ministries in nearly two decades, to assist with structural assessment and disaster response.
