Jewish leaders from across the Commonwealth gathered for a Hanukkah reception at the Executive Mansion, where Governor Glenn Youngkin reflected on his administration's efforts to combat antisemitism and celebrated the enduring message of the Festival of Lights.
The gathering brought together Jewish leaders from throughout Virginia to mark the holiday and recognize the state's commitment to supporting Jewish communities during challenging times.
"As families gather to kindle the lights of Hanukkah, we extend our warmest wishes to our Jewish neighbors celebrating the Festival of Lights," Governor Youngkin said. "In a season that reminds us that light endures even in difficult moments, we were honored to welcome leaders from Virginia's Jewish community to the Executive Mansion to celebrate this meaningful tradition together."
The reception provided an opportunity for Jewish communal professionals and lay leaders to connect with state leadership and discuss ongoing collaborative efforts to ensure the safety and flourishing of Jewish life across Virginia.
Eric Maurer, CEO of Jewish Peninsula, expressed gratitude for the Governor's partnership and looked ahead to continued collaboration with incoming leadership. "Thank you, Governor, for hosting this meaningful celebration and for your unwavering commitment to protecting and uplifting Virginia's Jewish communities. Your leadership in combating antisemitism and championing our safety has been deeply impactful during a time when it matters most," shared Maurer. "We're grateful for the partnership we've built, and we look forward with enthusiasm to continuing this vital work alongside Governor-Elect Abigail Spanberger to ensure Jewish life thrives across the Commonwealth for generations to come."
The event underscored the strong relationship between Virginia's state government and its Jewish communities, particularly around issues of security, combating antisemitism and preserving religious freedom. As the candles of Hanukkah illuminated homes across the Commonwealth, the reception served as a powerful reminder of the shared values of resilience, hope and community that unite Virginians of all backgrounds.
